Myopia (Nearsighteness) is when the eye grows too long. This can be caused from genetics or environmental facotors or a combination. Children are more likely to be nearsighted if their parents are. There are also studies that show increased time with near activities and a lack of outdoor time can also increase the amount of nearsightedness a child developes.
Myopia cannot be completely prevented but there are now ways that we can slow the progession once it starts in children. The treatments that we do at Vicksburg Optometry are with soft daily disposable contact lenses if the child is old enough and responsible enough. The other is low dose atropine drops that are administerd at night before bed.
